Equal playing time & rolling subs in youth football

How to share minutes fairly in every grassroots format, from 3v3 for the youngest age groups right up to 11v11, without doing sums on the touchline.

Why equal minutes matter

The FA's approach to youth football puts development and enjoyment ahead of results, and encourages coaches to give every child a fair amount of game time. Kids who sit on the bench week after week stop enjoying it, and often stop turning up. Parents notice too, and minutes are one of the most common causes of touchline tension.

Typical formats by age group

AgeFormatTypical squadBench
U5 – U63v3 / 4v45–6 players1–2 on the bench
U7 – U85v57–8 players2–3 on the bench
U9 – U107v79–10 players2–3 on the bench
U11 – U129v911–13 players2–4 on the bench
U13+11v1114–16 players3–5 on the bench

Always check your own league's rules on match length and substitutions.

Working out a fair share

Multiply the players on the pitch by the match length, then divide by your squad size. That's how many minutes each child should get. Here's a 7v7 example:

Match length2 × 25 min (50 min)
Players on pitch7
Squad size10
Total pitch minutes7 × 50 = 350
Fair share per player350 ÷ 10 = 35 min
Each player sits outAbout 15 min

Goalkeepers make this trickier: if one child stays in goal all game, share the outfield minutes between everyone else, or rotate the keeper at half time.

How to run rolling substitutions

  • Sub on a timer, not a feeling. Decide your change points before kick-off (e.g. every 8–10 minutes) and stick to them.
  • Rotate in pairs. Swapping two players at once keeps things simple and gives the team a moment to reset.
  • Balance across the season. Someone who started on the bench this week should start on the pitch next week.
  • Tell the kids early. Let the next player warm up a couple of minutes before they go on.
  • Keep a record. Memory is unreliable on a busy matchday. Write it down or let an app do it. Our free printable matchday sheet has minutes boxes and a sub plan ready to go.

Keeping parents on side

Most complaints come from not knowing. Explain your rotation policy at the start of the season, share minutes after each game, and give parents who can't make it a way to follow the match.
